New York woman's recipe and household scrapbook, 1920s-1940s.

Collection comprises an "Housekeeper's scrap book" (205 pgs.), a recipe organizer originally published by Kiggins & Tooker Co. in 1896. Tabbed sections in the scrapbook provide access to recipes and other information. Sections include soups, meats, poultry, fish, vegetables, eggs, salads, sauces, bread, cake, puddings, desserts, jellies, cereals, and miscellaneous. In addition to recipes, the unidentified owner of this scrapbook regularly pasted in helpful hints appropriate to the section. Published materials and newspaper articles served as the owner's primary sources of information; there are only a few handwritten recipes. The eggs section also contains recipes for pasta or cheese dishes, and the miscellaneous section holds use instructions for the scrapbook owner's household appliances and cookware, as well as directions for preserving plant bulbs, the proper care of plants, removing stains, providing first aid, and creating "cooling drinks," along with an ironing chart. The scrapbook's first item is an article on how to plan a church supper. Five items were laid-in, including newspaper articles that suggest that the owner resided in New York City or on Long Island during World War II. The household appliances and cookware referenced date from the 1920s to the 1940s. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.
